The Cresco City Council held a special meeting with the Howard County Supervisors on April 24, 2023, at 4:00 pm at the Howard County Courthouse. Council Members Carman, Bouska, Fortune, McConnell, and Kriener were present. No council members were absent. All three County Supervisors Pisney, Murray, and Eastman were present. Others in attendance included Mayor Brenno, Police Chief Ruroden, Sheriff Beckman, Jail Administrator Bauer, County Auditor Chapman, Deputy Clerk Hill, and City Clerk Elton,
The joint meeting was held to discuss proposed legislative changes that will affect the County and the City budgets. Proposed changes could have drastic impacts on the property tax revenues that both entities receive in the future. Law enforcement is the largest expense in both general fund budgets. This meeting was called to look at options for the City and County to work together to cut costs or to increase revenues.
Everyone was asked to come up with suggestions for working together on reducing costs or increasing revenue for the Sheriff’s Department and the City Police Department as well as any other opportunities for the County and City to work together.
The groups decided to wait until the legislation has passed to determine the true impact on the budgets. Another meeting will then be scheduled to discuss all options.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:50 pm. The next regular Cresco City Council meeting will be May 1, 2023, at 5:30 pm at Cresco City Hall.
Mayor: David J. Brenno
City Clerk: Michelle Elton
