Mayor Bohle called the special Cresco City Council worksession to order on June 1, 2020, at 5:30 pm. Council Members Brenno, McCarville, Fortune, Bouska, and Carman were present. No council members were absent. Public Works Director Freidhof, Theatre Manager Lickteig, and City Clerk Girolamo were also present.
Council Member Fortune discussed the Building Inspection Report submitted from May 19, 2020. The addition to the Theatre, known as the Scene Shop, is structurally compromised. The recommendation is to remove the Scene Shop.
Discussion was held whether the Scene Shop needed to be replaced and whether that could be delayed. Everyone agreed that to enable access to the stage, changing rooms for live performances, assembly and storage of props, and many other uses, the Scene Shop does need to be replaced.
Two or three architects will be contacted to give an estimated cost of their services and to help draw up plans for a simple addition that would be useful and energy efficient. The Council will then decide on the next steps based on the architects’ estimated costs.
A joint meeting with the Theatre Commission, Cresco Community Theater, and the Council will be scheduled for June 15, 2020 at 5:30 pm. The inspection report will be discussed with both groups.
Public Works Director Freidhof said he would look into state funding to help pay for asbestos removal in the Scene Shop. He will also contact Mehmert to get an estimated cost for removal of the building.
The Council discussed advertising for the Public Works Director position. We will probably try to get someone hired in October so advertising should be started in July or August. An updated job description should be developed. Ideally, the candidate will have water and sewer certifications and experience in the water, sewer, and street departments. The candidate must also have some supervisory experience and be able to work well with employees as well as the public. A pay range will need to be established and will be based on experience and qualifications. The job will be posted internally at the same time that it is advertised to the public.
Mayor Bohle asked for comments from the audience and there were none.
Brenno moved to adjourn at 6:42 pm. Bouska seconded and it passed all ayes. The next regular Cresco City Council meeting will be June 1, 2020, at 7:00 pm at Cresco City Hall unless an electronic meeting is deemed necessary. Telephone and log-in information will be made available for an electronic meeting.
Mayor Mark Bohle
City Clerk Michelle Girolamo
