Street Superintendent

The City of Cresco has an opening for a full-time position in our Street Department. Key duties will include supervision of all aspects of the Street Department including, but not limited to, Street Department staff, budget, street maintenance, plowing snow, tree trimming, yard waste collection, and maintenance of the storm sewer system. Applicant must have a valid Class B CDL with tank and airbrake.

Job Description

FLSA Status: Non – Exempt
Reports to: The Public Works Director

Essential Duties Required:

  • Assists in evaluating street maintenance needs and making recommendations in consultation with the Public Works Director to the City Council regarding budget, repair, reconstruction, and new construction.
  • Responsible for supervision of street department staff.
  • Responsible for annually evaluating performance of street department staff.
  • Responsible for maintaining all department vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain and utilize necessary record keeping functions related to the street department.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused during emergencies and highly active periods.
  • Responsible for compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Oversee and review small scale projects and programs.
  • Responsible for the City’s yard waste site and yard waste program.

Additional Duties Required:

  • General construction and maintenance.
  • Right-of-way maintenance, including but not limited to mowing grass, snow and ice removal, culvert installation, storm sewer maintenance, painting highway and street lines, sidewalk replacement, barricading streets, replacing old and missing signage, sanding and salting of city roads, and street sweeping.
  • Assists in maintenance of flood control and storm sewer outlets.
  • Any additional services assigned to the street department.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of how to fully operate and train employees on the following types of heavy machinery:
    • Street sweeper o Snow blower o Maintainer o Mini excavator o Snowplow
    • Leaf vacuum o End loader o Skid loader o Backhoe digger o Spray patcher
    • Roadside mower o Other related machinery
  • Know all the specifications of the equipment listed above and their limits.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of diesel engines.
  • Excellent communication skills required and ability to maintain good working relations with the general public and other city personnel.
  • Basic knowledge of MUTCD specifications.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required, post-secondary education preferred.
  • Must have Class B CDL with airbrake and tanker endorsements.
  • Position is subject to emergency events and requires a 30-minute response time.
  • At least five years progressive experience in street department operations.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.

Work Environment:

  • Ability and willingness to work in extreme conditions (e.g., hot and cold temperatures, wind, rain, dirt, smoke, dust, indoors, and outdoors).
  • Willingness to work long hours during emergency situations and extreme conditions; work may last 12-15 hours, or longer.
  • Position may be called in during emergency weather, and other situations.
  • Position may be physically demanding at times.
  • Must be able to exert seventy-five pounds of force occasionally; exert up to twenty pounds frequently; exert minimal force on a regular basis to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Must be able to climb, turn, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and handle objects.
  • Must be able to hear alarms and have the ability to audibly identify the presence of a danger or hazard.
  • Requires close vision and the ability to adjust focus; also requires some distant vision.
